Conferences

Research is a global activity. Our researchers do not get sufficient oppertunities on a regular basis whereby they can interact with researchers from mathematically developed countries. Thus they work virtually in islolation. Realizing this need, The Pakistan Mathematical Society committed itself to supporting international conferences regularly every year. It has thus supported the series of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Pure Mathematics Conferences in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Since 2000 when the series of International Pure Mathematics Conferences began, the number of conferences per year has increased.

   Symposium

Round Table Conference
The PakMS has organized a round table conference on 4th November 2004.

The future of mathematics in Pakistan is at stake. There are certain government policies, which do not suit mathematics. There is therefore a need to discuss these and put forward collectively our proposals to the government. It is for this purpose that the Pakistan Mathematical Society decided to organize a round-table conference on 4th November 2002. The agenda of the conference was:

  i.   Research Productivity Allowance,
ii.   Criterion for rating mathematicians, and
iii.   Involvement of mathematicians in the policy-making process.

As a result, a resolution comprising the point of view of the mathematical community was submitted to the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Council for Science & Technology, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Symposium
The PakMS has organized a symposium on Leonhard Euler on 12th June 2006.

A symposium was held at the auditorium of the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) to mark the 300th birth anniversary of the renowned Swiss mathematician, Leonhard Euler. The chief guest at the occasion was the deputy head of the Swiss Embassy in Islamabad, Mr. K.Obolensky.

The symposium was organized in collaboration with the Pakistan Science Foundation. The chairman PSF and Scientist Emeritus, Dr. M. M. Butt, inaugurated the symposium.

Amongst the speakers at the symposium were Professor M. Riazuddin, Director, National Centre for Physics, Professor Dr Qaiser Mushtaq, President, Pakistan Mathematical Society and Professor at Quaid-i-Azam University, Professor Dr M.Sarwar Kamran, Riphah International University, and Dr Khalid Rashid, Bahria University.
