There was a dearth of a mathematical
organization, which can guide and regulate the policies
of the government vis-à-vis the state of mathematics
and the welfare of the mathematical community at the national
level. Establishment of such a society was necessary to
mobilize and streamline the efforts and provide a necessary
centrifugal boost to the development of mathematics in useful
directions in Pakistan. |
|
Thus, on 15th May 2001,
a mathematicians moot was convened at the Best Western Hotel
in Islamabad, Pakistan. The gathering was attended by almost 70 professionals and senior students of mathematics. It was decided
that the Pakistan Mathematical Society shall be formed. |
|
Thus, on 26th June 2001,
the Pakistan Mathematical Society (PakMS) came into being.
At a function held at the Allama Iqbal Open University, the
constitution of the society was passed; officers and executive
members were elected. |
|
The PakMS was registered
on 16th November 2001. The Society also applied for
registration under the ACT XXI of 1860 to meet the requirement
of the Pakistan Science Foundation for registration of the society
with it. It was finally registered under this Act on 17th February 2003. |
|
The governing body
of the Society is the Executive Council (PakMS EC). It includes five
elected office bearers, namely, President, Vice-President,
General Secretary, Treasurer, Information Secretary and five
Executive Members. The Executive Council is elected in an annual
general meeting at the end of every second year. As per constitutional requirement,
it meets at least once every three months. |
|
Membership of the Society
is open to any person who holds at least a masters degree (or BS) in
mathematics, irrespective of gender, race, creed, region or
sect. |
|
The Society is dedicated
to supporting and encouraging those involved in research,
teaching, and the learning of mathematics at all levels. It
also organizes and supports seminars, workshops, lectures,
educational meetings, etc. It also cooperates with other scientific,
technological and industrial bodies in activities that
intend to promote mathematics. It organizes on a regular basis
quarterly national seminars, publishes a quarterly newsletter,
supports an annual international conference and publishes its
proceedings. |
